Lingwu Festive Lantern Tune, a traditional musical genre, was introduced from regions such as Suzhou, Zhejiang, and Western Hunan during the Tang Dynasty. It gradually evolved through the integration of various theatrical music, folk music, and local cultures. It was widely popular in regions such as Lingwu, Jiahe, and Lianzhou.
Lingwu Festive Lantern Tune is characterized by its harmonious music, distinct rhythms and rich singing techniques. Throughout its evolution, it skillfully combined ethnic percussion instruments with vocal styles to express characters’ emotions.
It bears similarities to both the flower-drum opera and the Qiyang Opera (a local form of opera with martial arts elements). The performances include concise and humorous duets, as well as rich and elaborate full-length repertoire.
In 2009, it was included on the representative list of the second batch of the city-level intangible cultural heritage items. In 2016, it was listed in the fourth batch of the provincial-level representative intangible cultural heritage projects.
